Bike

Best mode of transport in Ljubljana. But be careful, robberies in Ljubljana are not frequent except for bicycles, so attach your bikes CAREFULLY.

CITY BIKE

The BicikeLJ bike sharing system allows you to rent bikes from self-service terminals located throughout the greater Ljubljana city center. BicikeLJ bikes are particularly suitable for short trips of up to one hour, as the rental is free if you return the rented bike to the nearest docking station within one hour and wait five minutes before renting a new bike.

BicikeLJ app

The use of the BicikeLJ system is practically free. The only cost is the symbolic fee for the obligatory online registration with the system, which is €1.00 for one week and €3.00 for one year and must be completed before renting.

  • free for the first hour
  • 1.00€ for the second hour
  • 2.00€ for the third hour
  • 4.00€ for each additional hour

To complete your registration on the BicikeLJ website, enter your email address, credit card number, and Urbana Card number (card for city bus), which you’ll use to rent bikes. When the transaction is completed, you will receive your subscriber number and a four-digit personal identification number (PIN) to be entered when hiring a bicycle.

Follow these simple steps:

  1. Press button 4 on a BicikeLJ terminal to select the language of your choice.
  2. Press button 1 and enter your subscriber number that you received by email.
  3. Enter your PIN and confirm that you accept the terms and conditions of the BicikeLJ system.
  4. Select the number of the bike you wish to rent and confirm your selection.
  5. To release a bike from a dock, press the button at the top of the dock.

BUY BIKES

It is alway better to buy used bike than a new one (price and also bicycle theft).

Buy online: Facebook Marketplace and Bolha (Slovenian biggest online marketplace).

Physical places:

All three shops offer used bikes and they also offer bike service/repaire.

Bus

Ljubljana’s public transportation works well, but has one disadvantage: you can’t buy a ticket on the bus. You should buy an Urbana public transport card instead.

The trains are very, very slow. They often stop and wait for connections. On the positive side, they’re very quiet, clean and there’s often plenty of room inside. They also pass through pretty valleys, which helps to make the journey bearable.

Usually they have fixed places for pick up and drop off, such as airports and stations, but for an additional price you can ask them to pick up or take you somewhere more specific.
